Born out of a long-standing joint development deal between PSA (Citroën and Paugeot) and Fiat the latest Relay brings Citroën bang up to date in the panel van market.

Size wise, the load area remains virtually unchanged from that of the predecessors but the big changes are under the skin, the bonnet and in the cab. The latter has been completely redesigned, the diesel engines are all common rail and a great deal of attention has been paid to reducing the transmission of noise and vibration.

The 127 bhp 2.7-litre HDI has been carried over, but has now been joined by a 2.0-litre which produces 86 bhp and develops 142 lb/ft of torque and a 2.2-litre (104 bhp and 177 lb/ft). There's also a 110 bhp petrol on offer, suitable for conversion to LPG.

Available in a choice of three wheelbases, three roof heights and at three GVWs (2.9t, 3.3t and 3.5t), the new relay offers payloads from 1,110kg to 1,635 and load capacities ranging from 7.5m3 to 14.0m3.

Disc brakes are fitted all-round on all models except the 2.0 HDis.

The new cab retains the dash-mounted gearchange but it's now hydraulic rather than a cable linkage. There is bags of stoage space and some thoughtful touches like the folding clipboard mounted top dead centre.

The driving position is comfortable thanks to a multi-adjustable seat and tilt-adjustable steering column.

Servicing intervals are set at 12,500 miles with the 2.7HDi extended to 20,000 miles. As with all Citroën LCV product these days, Relay comes with a 3-year, 100,000 mile warranty as standard.

 
VERDICT 
These new Relays represent a complete revitalisation of the range with a good selection of engines, payloads and cubic capacities. Citroën is no longer an also-ran in the panel van market.
