Like its two brothers, the Citroën Relay and Peugeot Boxer, Fiat's panel van which is the result of a joint development arrangement with PSA (the French manufacurers' parent company) underwent a significant redesign in 2002.
It is structurally stronger, the mechanicals are better isolated from the bodyshell to reduce vibration, the cab interior is all new and there is an all common rail diesel engine line-up.
Three turbodiesels are on offer; the same 86 bhp 2-litre and 127 bhp 2.8-litre as found in the Relay and Boxer (designated JTD), as well as Fiat's own 2.3-litre JTD which produces 110 bhp and develops 199 lb/ft of torque. Last but not least there's a 2-litre, 110 bhp petrol for those looking to convert to LPG.
The beauty of all the JTD engines is the smooth delivery of low down torque, a welcome feature in any LCV.
Like its two brothers, the new Ducato is available with a choice of three wheelbases and roof heights, and at three gross vehicle weights; 2.9t, 3.3t and 3.5t. This results in a choice of cubic capacity from 7.5m3 to 12.0m3 and a payload spread of 1,025kg to 1,545kg.
The new cab interior is a revelation. It retains the dash-mounted gearchange, there are three seats as standard with the driver's multi-adjustable. Combined with the tilt-adjustable steering column this means that most people can find a comfortable driving position. All seats have lap and diagonal belts.
Storage space is abundant and includes a folding clipboard on top of the facia.
VERDICT
The new extensive Ducato range is a welcome addition to the panel van ranks and means that Fiat has a complete and very strong presence in the LCV market.
