Peugeot Boxer MWB / LWB Van
Peugeot has gone it's own way to a certain extent with the latest Boxer (launched in 2002), compared to its joint development partners, Citroën and Fiat. Unlike the other two, Boxer's range begins with a 2.5t GVW model. Apart from this, though, the line-up is pretty much identical to that of PSA partner Citroën, except for the front-end treatment, of course.
All the diesels are HDi, starting with the 86 bhp 2-litre. Next up comes the 2.2-litre (104 bhp) and at the top of the tree sits the 2.8-litre which is capable of producing 127 bhp and developing 221 lb/ft of peak torque at 1,800rpm. There's also a 2-litre (110 bhp) petrol which is aimed primarily at Peugeot's substantial number of motorhome customers. A great range of engines which supply smooth delivery of power across a broad band of revs.
The all-new cab is a vast improvement on that of the predecessors. The standard specification is higher, the ventilation system is one of the best we've come across and there are some neat touches to help the working driver get through the day. The gearchange remains dashboard-mounted.
VERDICT
The new Boxer range is evolution rather than revolution and offers a wide choice of models. Peugeot can rightfully be proud of its entire LCV range.
