The small van sector is a highly competitive market with manufacturers offering many styles of small vans for sale ranging from the car-derived van (CDV) to the high-cube vans and small panel vans. The CDVs being based on cars (e.g. Fiat Grande Punto, Ford Fiesta Van or Vauxhall Astra Van) are comparatively refined to drive and deliver good fuel consumption but a major limitation being the inability to carry heavy or bulky loads.

The hi cube vans offer a similar wheelbase to CDVs but can carry more load in terms of volume and weight. The high cube van (e.g. Ford Transit Connect and Fiat Doblo Cargo) is generally fuel efficient, easy to manoeuvre and easier to drive than a medium-sized panel van and most suited to carrying small to medium loads.

Peugeot, Fiat and Citroen have recently added a new sub-sector to the light van market by offering the sub-compact Bipper, Fiorino and Nemo vans for sale. These have been designed primarily for urban use and have a small footprint but a good payload and a deceptively large load area.
