LPG, or Liquefied Petroleum Gas is a mixture of propane and butane. Known also as Autogas its simple chemical make up delivers a clean burning and convenient source of energy.
Because LPG becomes liquid at atmospheric temperature if only slightly compressed it is easy to store and tranport. In liquid form it is about 250 times as dense as when a gas, saving a great deal of space! It reverts to gas when the pressure is reduced.
Across the world LPG autogas is established as an environmentally friendly form of transport. Worldwide there are over 11 million LPG vehicles, 4 million in Europe, and about 140,000 in UK. This has grown from 3000 in 1998.
Acceptance of LPG in the early days was not helped by availability but this has grown significantly with over 1300 LGP outlets in the UK by 2007.
In the UK, LPG has mainly been used in cars and light commerical vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes in weight. Most petrol vehicles are able to be converted to LPG, and the considerable cost savings of up to 40% or more in ongoing fuel cost are worth considering. These savings arise mainly from the considerably lower fuel duty on LPG.
Most vans and cars, having a petrol engine with spark ignition can be converted to LPG, but it is vital that you seek advice from a qualified person. At Lowcost Vans we are able to arrange for the work to be done, and advise on the suitability of LPG for your van and your circumstances.
For the budget conscious and environmentally concerned van owner, this is an option you may wish to consider.
